The items that should be thrown out of your pantry now may surprise you! In fact, I assumed that non-perishable items would last a long time, but in reality, the shelf life of some of these foods is as little as one month.
The list of the foods you need to check the expiration date asap!
White Flour has a life span of only 6 to 8 months for opened and unopened bags. Wheat flour has an even less shelf life of 4 to 6 months. Check your flour, and these shelf life rules do apply even when it’s stored in a sealed container.
Pancake Mix, expire in about 6 months.
Any thing expired! This is obvious but you may be surprised how many expired items are hiding in your pantry.
Brown Rice, only has a shelf life of 6 months. Therefore, the next time you stock up on the brown rice at Costco, make sure you write the date you purchased, not the expiration date on the storage container.
White Rice, has a much longer life span. Therefore you can safely keep up to 4 to 5 years!
Nuts, surprised me the most. Their shelf life is rather short. I never thought I had to pay attention to this before, but with the short shelf life of some of these nuts, I will devote more attention going forward.
- Almonds 9 to 12 months
- Cashews 6 to 9 months
- Peanuts 6 to 9 months
- Pecans 6 months
- Pistachios 3 months
- Pine Nuts 1 to 2 months.
Use your nose! A good rule of thumb is to smell the item, and your nose will give you a good idea if it’s gone bad. When in doubt, it’s better to be safe than sorry and toss the item and buy new.
